Metastability in Markov processes

چکیده
We present a formalism to describe slowly decaying systems in the context of finite Markov chains obeying detailed balance. We show that phase space can be partitioned into approximately decoupled regions, in which one may introduce restricted Markov chains which are close to the original process but do not leave these regions. Within this context, we identify the conditions under which the decaying system can be considered to be in a metastable state. Furthermore, we show that such metastable states can be described in thermodynamic terms and define their free energy. This is accomplished showing that the probability distribution describing the metastable state is indeed proportional to the equilibrium distribution, as is commonly assumed. We test the formalism numerically in the case of the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model, using the Wang–Landau algorithm to show this proportionality explicitly, and confirm that the proportionality constant is as derived in the theory. Finally, we extend the formalism to situations in which a system can have several metastable states. Metastability in Markov processes 2

Tunneling and Metastability of continuous time Markov chains
We propose a new definition of metastability of Markov processes on countable state spaces. We obtain sufficient conditions for a sequence of processes to be metastable. In the reversible case these conditions are expressed in terms of the capacity and of the stationary measure of the metastable states.
متن کاملMetastability and Dominant Eigenvalues of Transfer Operators
We prove upper and lower bounds for the metastability of a statespace decomposition for reversible Markov processes in terms of dominant eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding transfer operator. The bounds are explicitly computable and sharp. In contrast to many other approaches, the results do not rely on any asymptotic expansions in terms of some smallness parameter, but rather hol...
متن کاملMetastability and Typical Exit Paths
In this paper we review and discuss results on metastability. We consider ergodic aperiodic Markov chains with exponentially small transition probabilities and we give a complete description of the typical tube of trajectories during the rst excursion outside a general domain Q.
متن کاملOn $L_1$-weak ergodicity of nonhomogeneous continuous-time Markov processes
In the present paper we investigate the $L_1$-weak ergodicity of nonhomogeneous continuous-time Markov processes with general state spaces. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for such processes to satisfy the $L_1$-weak ergodicity. Moreover, we apply the obtained results to establish $L_1$-weak ergodicity of quadratic stochastic processes.
